Incredible Electric Bike for Beginners - DYU FF500 Review

The DYU FF500 has many features that beginner ebike riders look for, like an affordable price, comfort and great overall feel. I'll discuss these factors and more throughout this review, so keep reading if you're considering an ebike for your first commuter.

Affordable Price Under $1000

At just over $1000, the FF500 is one of the most budget-friendly full-size electric bikes available. Even so, it doesn't skimp on quality parts. It has a standard Shimano 7-speed drivetrain, comfortable rubber grips, and a bright LCD display with control pad.

Comfortable Upright Riding Position

The FF500's most attractive feature is its comfortable ride. It has an air-filled saddle with built-in pump for quick inflation. Combined with front suspension, seat post suspension, and upright posture, it delivers a smooth commute.

I took it off-road on some bumpy trails. The suspension handled it decently, though the upright position and high center of gravity made tight cornering a bit tricky. On wide trails it performed much better.

Smooth and Quiet Motor

The 500W motor provides smooth, quiet power. I only heard occasional popping from the stem when climbing hills. It takes a few pedal revolutions to kick in from a stop, but the throttle is very responsive.

The top speed is 20 mph on pedal assist and throttle. There seems to be a governor that cuts power exactly at 20 mph. It's not the smoothest transition, but decent for the price.

Good Hill Climbing Ability

Despite the mid-drive 500W motor, it handled a 26% grade hill well. I assisted some, but it did most of the work. The nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain on my 21 mile test ride further proves its climbing prowess.

Powerful Brakes

The disc brakes provide good stopping power for a bike this size and speed. Range was also impressive at 21 miles on a single charge.

Other Features

Some other positives are the internal battery placement, small folding size, and overall good value for a sub-$1000 ebike. Let me know in the comments if you have any other questions!
