Full review

Hey guys, today I’ll be reviewing a lightweight and stealthy looking electric road bike from Tenways.  These guys recently launched on indiegogo and are off to a good start and after taking this for a spin, I can see why, with features like hydraulic brakes, a magnetic torque sensor that gives power on demand and the belt transmission that doesn’t need oil and is maintenance free up to 18,000 miles.  So let’s dive in and see what you can expect with Tenways electric road bike.

Tenways bike comes with a 250 watt brushless motor in the rear wheel, powered by a 36 volt, 7 amp hour battery, that takes just 2 and a half hours for a recharge.  The bike comes with three PAS levels, with the highest mode rated at 20 mph, let’s see if I can reach that

(speed)... On PAS 1, I hit 15 mph.  Mode 2, 17 and the highest speed mode, 19 mph, just shy of the rating of 20. Here’s a comparison of all three speed modes...Now I’ve reviewed a couple other road bikes this same size and have reached around the 20 mph mark, so it’s right there as far as speed.

The acceleration is surprising for how small the bike is, you wouldn’t think it has that much power but it gets up and goes.  The bike weighs 33 lbs so it doesn’t have a lot of weight to carry and it is strong for the size with a weight capacity of 320.  It took 12.8 seconds to carry my 185 lb frame up to 19 mph….  All three speed modes have the same power for the first 20-30 feet… To demonstrate how quick the acceleration is, here’s the difference between PAS 3 and no power

(range vid)....This may be a long ride as the bike is rated from 43-80 miles, so while I’m out, I’ll let you know what I liked and didn’t like about the bike…...The astronautic aluminum alloy 6061 frame is seamlessly welded together and is designed to fit a rider 5’5 to 6’7.  I’m 5’11 and felt the bike handled my frame ok….The grips are also comfortable and made from a nice feeling rubber.  The seat is what you would expect for a road bike, it’s small, hard and uncomfortable without any padding.  I did switch into some padded clothing for this ride which made a huge difference….The torque sensor is magnetic rather than pressure, this makes it more sensitive, accurate and durable, when you stop pedaling the motor immediately switches over to glide mode to conserve battery life…..(battery update).... The single carbon belt drive transmission never needs oil and Teneways says you can expect zero maintenance up to 18,600 miles…...coming down hills is a good time, the 1.3” wide, road tires just glide and really pick up speed without a steep slope, at times I was hitting over 30 mph.  The tires are also puncture resistant and have a side reflective strip for night riding (night video) The last thing I liked about the bike is the smart backlit LCD screen, it’s small to go along with the frame of the bike and can be seen in the day.  The power buttons on top, menu on the side and plus and minus to change the PAS. The units can be changed over to mph in the settings and the bike can be locked with a password…..Once I got back to my car, I had 12% battery left.  My app recorded 38.83 miles with a 2 hr 41 minute ride time, which is just under the 43 mile rating on the low end but I had 12% battery left, so I think I could have hit that if I continued on.  Elevation gain was bigger than I thought with a total of 1,539’.  For PAS 3 with that type of gain, I was impressed with 38 miles.  Now that’s what you can expect for the highest energy consumption, switch the bike to PAS 1 and I’d bet you’d be approaching that 60-80 mile range if you’re around my weight.  38.83 miles makes the Tenways road bike, the longest range in this price range.

The last test I wanna do is a brake test of the dual hydraulic brakes, which are incredibly smooth and stopped me in 16’ from 19 mph

The Tenways Electric Road bike is water resistant, comes with a bell and has a 2 yr warranty.

To sum up, here’s what you get.  A top speed of 19 mph.  A nice acceleration for the size,  taking 12.8 seconds to reach 19 mph.  An incredible range of 40 - 80 miles, I got almost 39 on PAS level 3 with 12% battery life left.  There’s no hill rating but it can climb some decent hills, I went up a bunch of 7-8% slopes without any problem and the hydraulic brakes are nice and smooth, stopping me in 16’ from 19 mph.
