I tested the Dreame L40s Ultra, and its ability to physically drop its mop pads at the dock before cleaning carpets makes it one of the smartest robot vacuums I've ever used.

I have tested a lot of automated cleaners, but the Dreame L40s Ultra might just be the ultimate robot vacuum. This is a fully automated hybrid machine that vacuums, mops, and handles almost all of its own maintenance at a massive all-in-one docking station. From mapping your home to scrubbing floors and cleaning its own pads, it is designed to take sweeping and mopping entirely off your plate.

The initial setup and mapping process is actually pretty cool. I followed it around with my phone in my hand just so I could see it map out my whole house. As it entered a new room, the whole area would just appear on the map in real-time. The map of your house gets better over time, too. Each time the robot goes out to do its thing, it refines the layout. 

Once it's all mapped out, the Dreame app separates each room automatically. It made my living room area a bit too big during the initial run, but in the app, I could easily cut those rooms off and rename them. You can also combine rooms if you prefer. This level of customization sets the stage for a vacuum that genuinely adapts to your specific floor plan rather than just bouncing around randomly.

Real-World Performance

To really see what this thing could do, I threw a pretty big mess at it: spilled cold cereal and milk right on the floor. I grabbed the vacuum, set it by the mess, and hit the square spot-clean button on the unit itself. The vacuum then marks out a 5x5-foot area and just cleans everything in that zone. Because it was a hefty pile of cereal, I ran it a second time. After the second pass, the floor looked completely clean, and I sent it home. 

Next, I set up an obstacle course through a maze of chairs, flowers, boxes, and shoes to test its avoidance tech. This is by far the best obstacle avoidance I've seen for a robot vacuum. It navigated the maze like it was playing musical chairs, dodging the shoes and boxes without plowing into them. It easily climbed over thresholds of about an inch and a half. I did have to move one of the chairs when it got boxed into a dead end, but once I did, it immediately found its way out.

I also wanted to see how it handled long hair. I asked my wife how long her hair was, and she guessed shoulder length. The manufacturer claims that if hair is under 11.81 inches, it will not get caught in the vacuum. Well, there are three girls living in my house, all with hair longer than 12 inches. I ran this vacuum for over three weeks, and I found absolutely no hair tangled in the brush rollers. 

I also tested custom routines. In the app, I set it to clean my office and then the kitchen. For the office, I chose the lightest amount of water for mopping and the quietest suction. It followed those instructions perfectly. Once it finished the office, I watched it ramp up in power as it headed into the kitchen for a deeper clean. It even paused to go back to the dock, restock on water, and head back out to finish the job.

Design & Build Quality

The build quality of the Dreame L40s Ultra is excellent, and it packs in some mechanical tricks I really appreciate. One of my favorite design elements is the extending robot arm. The vacuum has a cool little arm that just jolts out to reach those hard-to-clean edges around your house. It does the exact same thing with the mop brushes, pushing them outward to scrub right up against your baseboards.

Noise levels are surprisingly low. While it was cleaning my kitchen, I noted that it was running as loud as it gets, and it wasn't very loud at all. Based on what I've seen and researched on their website, this is one of the quietest, if not the absolute quietest, robot vacuums out there. You can easily hold a conversation or watch TV while it works in the same room.

The massive docking station is where the magic happens, but it has a couple of minor quirks. It houses a clean water tank, a dirty water tank, a collector bag that lasts for about 100 runs, and a cleaning solution container. When I tried to fill the solution container with the bottle Dreame provides in the box, it didn't fill the tank all the way up, so I had to buy another one from Amazon. I also noticed that after a couple of weeks of use, it collects a little bit of dirt underneath the docking station base, which requires a quick wipe down.

The standout feature for me is how it handles different flooring types, specifically carpets. When the vacuum goes from tile to carpet, it automatically raises the mop brushes so it isn't dragging a wet pad across your rugs. But it gets better. If you select a room in the app that is entirely carpeted, the vacuum physically removes the mop pads, leaves them at the docking station, and heads out to vacuum. 

If you queue up two rooms—one with carpet and one with tile—it will leave the mop brushes behind to do the bedroom carpet first. When it finishes, it returns to the dock, automatically reinstalls the mop pads, and heads to the bathroom to mop. Watching it attach its own mop pads like Baymax putting on armor is pretty dang genius. 

The docking station's self-cleaning routine is another massive feature. When the robot returns from a job, it charges, auto-empties the dustbin, empties the dirty water, and restocks the clean water and solution. Most impressively, before it takes off to mop, the dock heats the water to 167 degrees. When it mops your floor, it's doing it with clean, hot, sanitized water. As it backs into the dock, the mop pads spin while water shoots up to clean them, and then it dries them completely.

The app integration is also top-notch. You can view your home in a standard flat map or a 3D version. You can dictate whether a room needs vacuuming, mopping, or both. You can set the exact water amount, change the pattern to a quick mop or a deep clean, and adjust the suction from quiet to turbo. If there's a specific mess, you can draw a little box on the map, and the robot will drive straight there, clean that exact square, and head back to the dock.

Who It's For

I highly recommend the Dreame L40s Ultra to anyone living in a medium to large home with a mix of hard floors and carpeting. If you have kids who spill cereal, pets that track in mud, or family members with long hair, this machine will handle the cleanup with almost zero intervention. It is built for people who want a truly hands-off, automated cleaning system.

Who Should Skip It

If you live in a small apartment or your home is entirely hard floors without a single rug, you should probably skip this model. The physical mop-dropping technology and heavy-duty docking station are amazing, but you'll be paying a premium for carpet-avoidance features you simply don't need.

Within the premium hybrid robot vacuum segment, the L40s Ultra stands out because of its mechanical mop removal. Many high-end vacuums will lift their mop pads a few millimeters when they detect carpet, which is fine for low-pile rugs but terrible for thick carpets. By physically dropping the pads at the base station, Dreame eliminates the risk of wet carpets entirely. Combined with the heated water washing and extending side arms, it offers a more thorough edge-to-edge clean than most competitors in this price bracket.
