I installed Jellyfish Lighting's permanent outdoor lights on my house, and after testing their app features and even running them over with an F-150, I am blown away by their durability.

I recently had Jellyfish Lighting out to my house to transform our exterior, and the results are incredibly impressive. They are based out of Utah, but they have certified vendors and installers across the entire country, which makes them highly accessible for almost any homeowner. 

They also sell DIY kits for customers who want to do the install themselves or who happen to live in areas without a local branch. During my installation, a crew pulled up, checked me in to make sure they had the right place, and started unloading. They brought out eight ladders and special roof pads that let them stand straight up on our angled roof. They worked fast, putting up a 15-foot section in just 15 minutes, and it completely transformed the look of our home.

Real-World Performance

I don't just take a brand's word on durability, so I decided to physically test just how tough these lights actually are. One of the installers, Joseph, told me they had previously run over these lights with a half-ton truck and done more damage to the concrete than the lights. We decided to test that claim right then and there by grabbing an F-150 and running over a loose strand in my driveway.

Usually on a house, you might see a communication fail from one light to the next, but because of the redundant line, a single dead bulb doesn't take out the whole house.

The hardware itself feels incredibly heavy-duty. Each unit is a three-diode RGB light that is 99.98% fully encapsulated, making it highly damage-resistant and waterproof. In fact, Joseph mentioned they have previously fully submerged these lights in a bucket of water while turned on, and they kept running without issue. 

Aesthetically, the setup blends seamlessly into the house. They offer the railing tracks in multiple colors—white, brown, black, and green—to match your existing eaves perfectly. The installers clamped and screwed the tracks securely under the eaves, popping the lights through the track so they stay completely hidden during the day. 

They were just as meticulous inside my garage. They mounted a 48-volt power supply and control box, adding a nice clean protector over the wiring. It looked infinitely better than the messy, hanging cords the sprinkler guys usually leave behind. They also size the system perfectly for your home; if you have a massive house or need separate controllers for a pool house or backyard, they just add extra power supplies to push the extra footage of lights.

The real magic of Jellyfish Lighting lives inside their smartphone app. You can emulate up to 16 million colors using an adjustable RGB scale to give you the exact shade you want. While you could spend a lifetime programming each individual light, my family was perfectly happy sticking to the massive library of preset programs. For the Fourth of July alone, there are roughly ten different animated effects. When I took my family outside in the dark, we loved cycling through the Halloween fireworks, pink glitter, and a surprisingly creepy preset called 'Halloween worms'.

The app also gives you incredible granular control over your home's layout. Our house was segmented into three distinct zones, and I was able to customize the pattern, speed, twinkle effect, overall brightness, and individual red, green, or blue color brightness for each section. 

Once you dial in a look, you can save the program, put it on a schedule, or tie it to calendar events so it turns on and off automatically on specific days. It even connects with Alexa and Google Assistant for smart home voice commands. If you ever need to replace a light down the road, the 4-wire system (power, communication, redundant, ground) is extremely easy to splice. You just cut the old light out, splice the new one in by matching the wires, and you are back in business.

I'd point homeowners who want beautiful, fully customizable, and highly durable architectural lighting toward Jellyfish. If you want a set-and-forget system that you can easily change from a smartphone for every holiday or season of the year, this is an outstanding long-term investment for your property.

Compared to traditional high-end Christmas lights, Jellyfish Lighting is in a completely different league. Standard holiday lights break easily in storage, look messy hanging off the gutters during the day, and require you to climb a dangerous ladder every November. 

This permanent system stays hidden in color-matched tracks year-round, withstands extreme physical abuse, and features a redundant communication line so one dead bulb doesn't ruin the whole visual display. Plus, the availability of both full-service professional installation and direct-to-consumer DIY kits makes it much more versatile than many competing local lighting installers.
