Overview

Tenways is marketing this bike as the 'urban all-arounder', claiming it is primed for both daily errands and cross-country adventures. I have spent plenty of time testing commuter e-bikes, and I have started calling the Tenways AGO X the absolute epitome of a high-end bike with a mid-range price tag. Coming in at $2,100, I know that still sounds like a lot of money to some riders, but when you look closely at what that cash actually buys you, it proves to be a very strong value.

Tenways operates with a mission to make high-quality e-bikes accessible to all. They achieve this primarily through what they call a robust supply chain, meaning they source premium parts at highly competitive prices. They are based out of the Netherlands, a cycling hub that inherently builds a bit of trust when it comes to bike design. They have been building their industrial manufacturing experience since their first highly successful e-bike launch in 2021, which raised nearly $830,000.

Overall, this e-bike provides higher-end components and striking aesthetics that you typically do not see at this price point. In my testing, I wanted to see if it truly lived up to that 'outperform the league' marketing pitch, taking it from the pavement to the mud to see what it could actually handle.

Real-World Performance

When it comes to power, Tenways equipped the AGO X with the Bafang M410 mid-drive motor. On paper, it might not look incredible at just 250 watts, but out on the road, it is highly impressive when it comes to motor reaction time. Because it is a mid-drive motor paired with a torque sensor, the second I put pressure on the cranks, the bike immediately surged forward.

There is no throttle on this e-bike, which means if you want to get anywhere, you absolutely have to pedal. I tested the five different pedal assist levels, and in the highest setting combined with the highest gear, I topped out at exactly 20 mph. While you do not get massive top-end speed, the motor does produce 80 Nm of torque, which provides excellent pulling power.

To test that torque, I took the AGO X off-road into some very soft, muddy conditions after a full day of rain. I attempted to climb a steep 40 percent grade hill. While the Bafang mid-drive is built for climbing, the terrain was just too steep and the mud too slick, and I ultimately failed to make it up that specific incline. Despite that extreme test, the overall ride feel on typical routes was fantastic. The bike is completely silent, and I did not experience any annoying pops, cracks, squeaking, or grinding during my rides.

Design & Build Quality

The look and design of the AGO X are where this bike really shines. The frame is exceptionally well-crafted. Up around the head tube, where you normally see bulky, ugly welding scars on bikes in this price range, it is baby-bum smooth. Traveling down toward the battery and the cranks, there are zero welding marks. The only single visible weld I could find was tucked back on the rear fork.

Tenways managed to keep the weight relatively low, coming in at exactly 59 lbs. Despite being under 60 lbs, the frame is stout enough to carry a rider up to 300 lbs. It is available in three different colors and three sizes. I am 5 foot 11, and I tested the medium frame. With the Selle Royal saddle raised so I had a slight bend in my knee, I was sitting in more of a mountain-bike-style posture, which I found to be highly comfortable for urban riding.

They have also done an incredible job disguising the fact that this is an e-bike at all. The battery fits into a seamlessly grooved transition on the downtube, and they painted it to perfectly match the frame. The internal wiring takes things a step further. While you see a few cables up front, they dive directly into the stem and completely disappear until the very rear of the bike.

Key Features

One of the coolest design choices I noticed is the built-in headlight. I have rarely seen a bike with a headlight integrated directly into the main frame, and it looks incredibly sleek. The bike also features a hovering-style rear rack. The support arm comes in from the back, runs up the frame, and secures with just two screws, leaving it looking like it is floating over the rear tire.

Up front, I put the Suntour front suspension to the test. It features a lockout, but when I rode with it fully open, it offered plenty of travel, and I could not get it to bottom out even on hard bumps. The bike rides on 29-inch puncture-resistant tires. They lean more toward a street tread than an aggressive off-road knobby, but they handled my varied routes just fine. Braking is handled by higher-end Tektro hydraulic disc brakes, hitting all the right pressure points for quick, safe stops.

Powering the system is a UL-certified 36V 10Ah battery, though Tenways says you can also buy a 15Ah version. It takes about 5 hours to fully charge, and the brand claims it can deliver up to 62 miles of range. It is easily removable with a twist of a key if you prefer charging off the bike.

I do have to call out one major design flaw I encountered. I think Tenways took the internal wiring a little too far with the tail light. They routed the wire directly up inside the aluminum rear fender. During my testing, one of the internal tie-down points came loose, causing the wire to drop and rub constantly against my rear tire. I did not want to remove the whole wheel to fix it, so I ended up just unplugging the wire and taking the tail light off entirely.

Who It's For

I would highly recommend the Tenways AGO X to urban commuters who appreciate the seamless, instant engagement of a torque-sensing mid-drive motor. If you value premium aesthetics, smooth welds, totally silent operation, and high-end components like hydraulic brakes and integrated lighting without paying a premium price, this bike is built for you.

Who Should Skip It

If you are a rider who relies heavily on a throttle to get around, you should skip this bike, as it is strictly pedal-assist only. Additionally, if you need to sustain speeds above 20 mph for long commutes, or if you regularly tackle extreme, slick off-road grades, this setup will not be aggressive enough for your needs.

How It Stacks Up

When looking at the broader e-bike market, it can be very difficult to find a mid-drive motor and a torque sensor paired with a beautifully finished frame for under $2,500. Most bikes in this mid-range price bracket rely on cheaper rear hub motors and basic cadence sensors, which often result in a jerky, delayed riding experience.

By utilizing the Bafang M410 mid-drive, Tenways elevates the AGO X above typical budget commuters. It rides and feels like a bike that should cost hundreds of dollars more. While it lacks the raw top speed and throttle convenience of some direct-to-consumer hub-drive models, it trades that for a much more natural, refined, and bicycle-like pedaling experience.

Final Verdict

In my testing, I came away deeply impressed by the sheer quality of the gear you get for the price. With its mid-drive motor, Tektro hydraulic brakes, Suntour suspension, and that masterfully crafted frame, the Tenways AGO X delivers an exceptional ride. For $2,100, it truly stands as a high-end bike with a mid-range price, provided you do not mind pedaling and can overlook a minor tail light routing issue.
